Gather Round Ye Respectable Folk

Gather round ye respectable folk,

To witness God’s will be done.

Be still your plow and oxen under yolk,

Our cleansing has surely begun.

Ridding our midst of minions from Hell,

Let thy fires rage and consume.

At high noon on the ring of chapels twelfth bell,

Let thine sentence be seal of thy doom.

With bible in hand and righteous indignation,

The minister stern raises hand.

Tossing torch with a grin and pompous resignation,

Burning witches to ash by flames fanned.

Good Salem be freed from Satan’s cursed lot,

As thy God has so vocally commanded.

May their bodies for eternity lie in torment and rot,

Our morality, their souls remanded.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: The Salem witch trials occurred in colonial Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft—the Devil’s magic—and 20 were executed. Eventually, the colony admitted the trials were a mistake and compensated the families of those convicted. Since then, the story of the trials has become synonymous with paranoia and injustice, and it continues to beguile the popular imagination more than 300 years later.  More can be read at the Smithsonian Magazine website http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/brief-salem.html

It Rides on Horse With Crimson Eyes (Acrostic)

It rides on horse with crimson eyes

Cleaved head its eternal quest

Hades resurrected, for centuries tries

Avenging soul the Devil blessed

.

By night the Hollow, Hell on earth

Onerous task in this Sleepy land

Demon slaughters for all its worth

Child and woman and man

.

Raise its head from unmarked grave

A task of a gruesome sort

Ne’er resting until craniums been saved

Ensure the wrath of the apocalypse four

Cataclysm

A cataclysm

Things…

Not just any things, but everything

Erupting…

Spewing fire, rock, ash

Vesuvius in the flesh

Raining devastation in torrents

Emotions flooding

Consuming everyone…

Nothing is spared

Rage uncontrollable

Wielding immense power

Resulting in blood and tears

Those that worship are left in ruins

Blaming themselves…

Their actions for this travesty

Without shame

Destructive behavior persists

Until there was nothing left

Nothing, but ashes and rubble

And a legacy of carnage

That will last for generations

As We Near Our End (Tanka)

As we near our end

Do we find any comfort

Letting life go dark

Heaven awaits its next Saint

May you pass in peaceful sleep

Hands Outstretched Across Aisle Hallowed

Hands outstretched across Aisle hallowed

Feigning sincerity and honest concern

Smiles and handshakes, there meaning shallow

Political mutiny from stem to stern

~

Spoils for the taking a populace held hostage

Bends to their whim and their will

With head in the sand like proverbial ostrich

They cater to every tyrant and shill

~

Too blind to notice or choosing not to see

Middle panders fringe left and then right

With no sense of reason what will be will be

Too beat down to put up a fight

~

When self-interest takes over who holds the bag

Its the poor, elderly and non-essential

Defined by the very people who brag

That their views are the most consequential

~

Left with a government who has shuttered their doors

We The People have nowhere to turn

Being held at the mercy of liars and whores

May their pinstripes and wingtips catch fire and burn

~

Honestly looking upon the tragedy we face

On whom does the fault truly lie

Yes, on the rodents that inhabit this place

But also on the uninformed, uninvolved, you and I

~

So when next we sit down and complain of our state

Look inside to what you have done

For without participation, this inevitable fate

Will consume and never be undone

I Saw the Mountain (Tanka)

I saw the mountain

And it called me to conquer

But I shyed away

Too terrified of the climb

To reach my full potential

Torment of Demons (Haiku)

Torment of demons

Live within my heart and soul

A mental typhoon

Encircled In Autumn

Encircled in Autumns chilling grasp,

Warmth of tea cup in my hands I clasp.

Just cool enough for a sweater in evening,

No animosity toward Summers most abrupt leaving.

Crunch of the leaves and the crisp in the air,

Young and old attitude, devil-may-care.

Breathing in freely a new lease on life,

Renewing loves vows of husband to wife.

Truly beauty exists in the wane of the year,

Another season born, greeted with cheer.

As winter approaches and darkness takes hold,

We all settle in for long months of cold.

Please do not obsess and never you fear,

Take comfort in the arms of those you hold dear.

For this, as surely as winter won’t last,

Time and time again as done in the past.

Daily the sun rises and Spring will return,

A lesson in grade school we all must have learned.

Second Hand Ticks (Tanka)

The second hand ticks

Counting down life in fractions

Like a clock’s movement

A nation oblivious

Never sees its unwinding

Left For Dead (Sonnet)

Flayed like road kill quivering

Unseen and left for dead

On black, cold asphalt shivering

A crack upside the head

From gaping wounds bleeding

A gasp for one last breath

The feel of life receding

Assured most certain death

The black it grows darker still

No longer knowing this place

Sounds they fade and silence fills

The whole of dying minds space

In an instant the sun shines bright

As gentle hands draw me to the light
